A highly important carved gilt-wood marble topped console table from a design by Matthias Lock, for Hinton House, Somerset, England.
The marble top supported on a conforming frieze carved with egg and tongue mouldings, enclosing arched fluting with foliate clasps at the corners. The apron centred by a mask of Hercules wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, the head forming a cap with the paws draped below and flanked by tasselled tails and swags of drapery lined furry pelt which continues to the side. The cabriole legs carved at the knees with lion’s masks, above scrolled acanthus leaves and raised on paw feet carved behind with further scrolling acanthus leaves.
